I know we’ve been stuck indoors since March, or at least those of us who care about the health of ourselves and others have, so the importance of fashion has been taking a backseat. Here in New York it’s starting to get colder and as I pack up my summer clothes for storage and look at all the fun outfits I missed out on wearing, I decided to not let that happen with my Fall and Winter wardrobe. Getting dressed and putting on an outfit, even if you’re not going anywhere, makes you feel good and can change your mood tremendously and honestly I don’t know about you but I will do anything I can to get a lil serotonin nowadays. For this season, there are some great fashion trends that I have been loving and pieces I want to incorporate into my closet. Here are my favorite fashion trends for the Fall that I think you should shop so we can all get a little nugget of joy in these tumultuous times.
1. Leather
You’ve been seeing it everywhere…whether it’s a leather blazer, leather pants (r.i.p Aritzia Melina Pant), or knee high boots, it’s very obvious that you need some leather in your closet for this season. Last fall I was lucky to pick out a great pair or leather pants and top but for this season I’m on the hunt for the perfect leather blazer. Even though we aren’t doing much going out, leather is such a great option that you can dress up and down.
2. Chunky Boots
Even at 5’11, you will see me this fall wearing my platform docs, I literally do not care… Chunky boots can be worn with anything: denim, skirts, dresses, tights, high socks, they’re perfect! The chunky boot look specifically is great when wearing a super feminine look such as paired with a flouncy dress or sleek midi skirt.
3. Sweater Vests
Who would’ve thought every outfit I would be seeing on Pinterest would be mimicking Chandler Bing but sweater vests are definitely in for the season. Layering is always great not just for practical reasons to stay warm but to put a long sleeve turtleneck underneath a vest is also just super cute. There are some great prints such as argyle or houndstooth but I would definitely recommend trying to thrift one so it’s authentically classic.
4. Funky Tights
I love a good pair of tights and I think for the fall we need more people to embrace this trend. Because so many people missed out on wearing skirts, shorts, and dresses this past summer, adding tights is a way to continue to wear them. Sheer, opaque, fishnet, whatever your poison is, you need to stock up (get it 😉 )
5. Bright Colors
Brands like House of Sunny and Paloma Wool have been taking over the fashion world lately. Something that you can take away from these fancy brands that you might not want to indulge in? BRIGHT COLORS BELONG IN FALL!! Don’t just wear your pastels and bright colors in the summer to match the beautiful sunny weather. On the chilly, overcast, grey fall days is when you need your yellow pants or fuschia sweater the most!
6. Fringe
Live out your Western fantasy dreams by wearing fringe this season. Whether it’s on a jacket, bag, or sweater, you must have it in your wardrobe. And go further than just tan suede fringe too, get something more exciting like fringe made of rhinestones!
7. Capes
For this trend I suggest you don’t listen to Edna Mode’s “no cape” advice. The cape and poncho look is definitely in for fall. It gives me regal/U.K/preppy vibes and I’m so here for it. It’s also a great piece for transitional season clothing.
8. Plaid
It’s not like Plaid ever went out of style but for fall 2020 it is definitely in more than ever. Challenge yourself to get more creative than your usual plaid color combinations and try some bright blues, purples, pinks, oranges, and browns.
9. Metallics
If you ask a friend of mine my favorite color, there’s a good chance they would say metallic silver. There is nothing I love more than something in metallic silver. Yes, I love silver regularly for jewelry, hardware accents, etc but if I see a bag or shoe in metallic silver I promise you I probably am in love with it without even having to see it. I love that metallics are in for this season but more than just silver and gold, it’s the pink, blue, and burnt orange metallic pieces.
10. Co-ord Sets
Lastly, Co-ord sets in the past 2 years have become more trendy but specifically for this season I’ve seen a lot of sweater and pant co-ord sets and sweater and bralette sets that I’ve been loving. Especially for loungewear or athleisure while we’re at home quarantining, co-ord sets are something that are so perfect to elevate the WFH look. Sets also make it easier to get ready in the morning so it’s a win-win!
11. Trenches
Let’s normalize wearing trench coats for other reasons than just women hiding lingerie for a steamy night. A trench coat is the best fall transitional item while it’s still not too cold. Besides being useful, it’s such a classic look that you don’t need to try hard to achieve.
12. Corduroy
I’ve always been a fan of corduroy for myself but in men’s fashion too it’s especially so good. I definitely think that people should try getting into the blue, green, and cream corduroy for this season. Corduroy screams fall so this list wouldn’t be complete without it.
13. Big Cardigans
Something that men’s fashion is definitely taking from women’s is big, chunky cardigans. The comfort of a cozy cardigan is like a hug from your grandmother. There is nothing better to keep you warm and protected in this upcoming season.
14. Bold Prints
Just like bright colors are in for fall so are bold prints. So many button downs have great prints easy to incorporate into your fall fashion. Paisley and floral are some of my all time favorites that are easy to find when shopping.
15. Crossbodys
Bags aren’t just for women, they’re for everyone because they are practical af! We have things we need to carry, why is it feminine to wear a bag?!? Crossbodys for men specifically have been such a vibe. Belt bags, fanny packs over the chest, whatever it is I think there is nothing hotter than a man with a good bag.
16. Statement Socks
My father has always been the king of cool socks since I was a kid and always influenced my sock game. For this upcoming season, it is so easy to add some simple color to a fit with a pair of socks peeking through. For some low top sneakers or oxfords especially, throw a statement sock on to tie the look together.
17. Cashmere
Cashmere is always advertised as a delicacy for women but honestly after experiencing the comfort and luxury of cashmere I don’t think there is anything more appropriate for everyone and anyone. Nowadays they make everything cashmere, not just sweaters. So let’s try getting a pair of cashmere sweatpants or socks for when it get’s bitter cold, I promise you won’t go back.
18. Wide Leg Pants
I don’t know who hasn’t heard this yet but skinny jeans are sort of over…so you need to go buy a pair of wide leg pants immediately. A wide leg is such an elegant addtion to fashion, making outfits more unisex. Wide leg pants are also 10x more comfortable, we don’t need out pants suffocating us anymore.
19. Faux Fur
Another item that’s usually catered towards women that men should try purchasing for this season. A nice fur bomber jacket is such an easy way to elevate a look while also staying super warm. There’s ones with fur on the outside and fur on the inside, whatever your choice is, this is the perfect time to buy.
20. Unique Denim
Most people wear denim everyday, I know…but I usually see cool, unique styles of denim set aside for women and not embraced by men. A two toned pair, bleached, checkered, something more interesting than your basic pair of Levi’s is definitely a fall staple.
